Celebrating 40 Years!

It was February 23-26, 1975, in Houston, Texas, when the very first World of Concrete was held. With just 3 sponsoring organizations (American Society for Concrete Contractors, American Concrete Pumping Association and Concrete Construction Publications) and 2 participating organizations (American Concrete Institute and Portand Cement Association), the landscape of the commercial concrete construction industry was about to create the largest, annual international trade show now in its' 40th year!

70 exhibitors, 19 speakers, and 1,100 attendees would take part in the historic event. Today WOC features over 1,300 exhibitors, 80 + speakers, and more than 50,000 registered professionals.

Now of course we would like to think that WOC was the biggest event happening in 1975, but let's face it, the world was changing, and below are just some of the things happening during the year of our inception.

At 1805 feet tall, the CN Tower was the world's tallest freestanding structure was completed. The lower 1500 feet were slipformed and required careful control of concrete strength during winter construction. Peter Smith and John Bickley developed a system to assure that the concrete gained sufficient strength with heated concrete, insulation for 37 feet below the slipform, and one of the earliest uses of maturity methods to monitor strength gain.
