Ferguson Safety Products is a leading distributor of H-Forms Landscaping Walls, a revolutionary insulated concrete form (ICF) that competes economically with concrete blocks, otherwise known as CMU (concrete masonry units) .
“The flexible concrete shear-wall design has made H-Forms useful for the foundations of many mobile, manufactured and modular homes, as well as complete houses, for small retaining walls, patio walls and sound walls; for fences and planters and even for lap pools,” said Napa architect David Horobin, the product designer and owner.
“We can save time and about 60 percent of the foundation cost,” he added. “We have devised streamlining methods for erecting the forms and pouring concrete. It’s not just the product, it’s also the installation that saves time and money.”
Supported with steel reinforcing bars and filled with concrete, the result is a structurally sound wall that is insulated with a vapor barrier ready to accept the final exterior finishes, he explained.
Stan Queen, project manager for California-based Shea Homes, has endorsed the product for years.
“We have worked with H-Form to build sound walls, monuments, retaining walls and patio walls in several large developments in the San Jose area,” Queen said. “The product has proven itself time and time again with speed of construction, ease of use and cost effectiveness.”
Other California builders using H-Forms include Citation Homes of Northern California, Davidon Homes, American Homes, Standard Pacific Homes, Shapell Homes of Northern California, Paragon homes and Landmark Development.
Horobin said the H-Forms eliminate the need for conventional concrete footings as 95 percent of the time it’s much less expensive to use a pier foundation.
“They are easy to transport and lift, lock together in assembly, create perfect 90-degree corners, bend and cut easily, use 23 percent less concrete than any other ICF, install in 10 to 20 percent of the time compared to concrete blocks and meet all structural code requirements for four inches of reinforced concrete,” he said.
